Anatomy of the 20-Digit LEI Code
To ensure consistency across international financial registers, every LEI is built using a uniform structural layout established by ISO 17442 [1]:
- Characters 1-4 (LOU Prefix): Identifies the Local Operating Unit that issued the code (e.g., character block 7ZW8 represents code issued by GLEIF-accredited entities).
- Characters 5-18 (Entity ID): A unique, random string assigned to the specific legal entity to prevent duplicate codes.
- Characters 19-20 (Check Digits): Validation digits calculated using the ISO 7064 Mod 97-10 algorithm to verify format integrity [2].
This layout ensures that every LEI contains structural check features that detect formatting errors instantly in financial message networks.
